Halloween costumes that are only used once, plastic spiders destined for the trash, and countless candy wrappers only call for waste! Spooky Season can generate a lot of waste. In fact, the average trick-or-treater typically generates around one pound of trash.

Here are some tips on how you can help reduce the environmental impact of this beloved holiday:

  • Not all candy is made equal: Here are some of our environmentally friendly treats to hand out this year: Unreal Candy- non-GMO chocolates that are certified Fair Trade. Natural ingredients such as beet root, carrot, and red cabbage juices are used to color the candy coatings.  Yummy Earth Lollipops-USDA Certified Organic and available in reusable or resealable packaging, cutting down on waste. Go Organic Fruit Chews- Non-GMO Project Verified and USDA Certified Organic. The chews are made with Fair Trade-Certified sugar, and the bulk candy comes in home-compostable, cellophane bags.

  • Sustainable Halloween Costumes: Buy second-hand costumes or have an annual costume swap with friends. You can also reuse things around the house like old t-shirts and boxes to make Halloween costumes the whole family will love!

  • Reusable Trick-or-Treat Bags: Use what you have around the house already like a canvas bag that you can add stickers, glitter, or other fun decorations to.

  • EcoFriendly Halloween Decorations: Head to your favorite thrift store to find previously used decor, make your own decoration, or buy decorations that will hold up year after year!

This Halloween, start some environmentally friendly traditions that you can pass down for years to come that will help take care of our environment along the way.
